Covers to Gush Over (13)

The future is a mysterious thing that most of us like to  imagine will be an electronic utopia. Robots, spaceships, jetpacks and more; the possibilities are out of this world. In homage to what might one day be, the Lit Monsters have decided to share five futuristic covers that they find truly gush worthy.

Crossed by Ally Condie

I love Ally Condie’s cover for Matched and this love definitely continues with her cover for Crossed. Cassia is again featured on the cover, but this time she’s abandoned her green dress and destroyed the not so perfect futuristic bubble the Society created for her. Cassia is a rebel and this couldn’t have been shown more flawlessly then is it here. The way the shards are flying out into the air is a neat effect, but the fact that there aren’t any near her foot is a little odd. I really like the model they chose; She’s really pretty and in my opinion justly portrays Cassia. Aside from everything above I really enjoy how well the cover colours match each other. The minty green from matched will look amazing next to the blue they chose for corssed!

Girl Parts by John M. Cusick

Not one of us knows what the future really holds for us, but we do all have some pretty wicked and imaginative ideas. Many books take place in the future, where many of these creative ideas come to life in our imaginations; with the covers to match! Girl Parts has a very interesting cover that is very futuristic; A Robot that looks and acts like a human being! The cover is very plain. Lots of white shades, but the girl hidden inside of the box with packing peanuts and bubble paper all wrapped up stands out; because of her fiery red hair. You automatically are drawn to the girl in the box, and wonder " Whys she in a box?" You would come to the conclusion she’s a robot, or that she’s psycho. None the less, this cover is pretty stellar if I do say so myself. See you in the future, next CTGO!

A Million Suns by Beth Revis

Beth Revis’s cover for A million Suns is nothing short of spectacular! The stars and galaxy look amazing and I love how they gradually changed the background colour from a bright baby blue to periwinkle and finally a light pink. The gradual mix of colours makes the cover pop and the whole thing is rather breath taking, much like Beth’s cover for Across the Universe. The cover also features a small part of Godspeed, which is the name of the futuristic spaceship where the novel takes place, and of course two models portraying Amy and Elder. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw them on the cover. They are definitely one of my favourite couples and to my delight they appear to be holding hands! I’m definitely excited to read A Million Suns, so I can gush over more than just its gorgeous cover.

Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Amy Kathleen Ryan’s UK cover for her novel ‘Glow’ is breathtaking and deserves to be in this week’s CTGO with the rest of the amazing futuristic covers! I don’t even know where to look! My eyes dart all over the cover to the backdrop of the main character Waverly and then to the splatter of stars or even on to the cleverly illustrated title! I love how the purples and blues eventually become engulfed into the black border. Quite intriguing since the plot of this novel is based in space and you know what a constant bother in space is? Black holes. Maybe this is a subtly hint at a scene in the novel or maybe not? If you want to find out, you’ll have to pick up the book when it comes out next month! A few of my favourite things about this cover are the title and the catch phrase. I love how the letters are nice and bold and white, which helps the letter ‘pop’ on the busy background! The ‘O’ is an eclipsed moon and I like it because it’s a simple and elegant way to create interest by just looking at the cover! The catch phrase! It sure caught my attention! It seems like a lot of weight to have put on fifteen year old shoulders! I know I want to read it and find out how she deals with the impending attack on her ship and who she’ll choose—Keiran or Seth?

Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson

The Lit Monsters love YA covers, but once in a while a non YA catches our eye. Daniel H. Wilson’s cover for Robopocalypse has done just that and it fits perfectly into this week’s futuristic theme. The cover is simple and rather self explanatory featuring the face of a female looking robot with amazingly vibrant red eyes. Alone the cover looks interesting, but in my opinion what really makes this cover gush worthy is how eerie it looks on display. My local Chapters bookstore has a huge upright stand showing 15 copies of Wilson’s cover right by its entrance. As soon as you walk in and see all these robotic red eyes staring at you...it sends a small chill up your spine. As if there really is a Robopocalyse on the rise.
