Author: Kristin Cashore
Review: kaependragon
She is the last of her kind . . . . It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves. This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her. Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. You don’t need to have read Graceling to love Fire. But if you haven’t, you’ll be dying to read it next.

First off, you do not have to have read Cashore's previous novel 'Graceling' in order to understand this book! They are separate novels that are centered around completely different characters. Kristin Cashore's writing style is different to what I'm normally use to. However, after I got use to the flow it was a refreshing read! She has created a world that is just under 'mind boggling' and way above 'freakin' awesome'! I admit (and not shyly) that I would love to live in The Seven Kingdoms, which is where this book takes place. A land where people can have special powers depending on their eyes and Ms. Cashore has built a kingdom(s) that has a network of cutthroat and devious rulers and even potential rulers are fighting against the reasonable and fair kings and Queens. Enter Fire, the main character. I liked her for her strength, intelligence and fighter spirit and not to mention that she is a kick ass archer! Many people in the region distaste her because she is half monster and half human and she can control people's minds. As a reader I fell in love with Fire because of her personality and not because of how beautiful she was described to be in the book. Therefore, everyday is a struggle and when things change in her world and she is needed she has no qualms about stepping up. I enjoyed this novel a lot and dare I say more than 'Graceling'? The plot line in this story was far more interesting than Cashore's previous novel, although the concept from both was interesting! Anyone who's looking for a completely different type of novel filled with battle strategies, action, love triangles and colorful monsters that hunger for the flesh of a particular human-monster named Fire then this book is for you!
4/5 different eye colors!
