Covers to Gush Over (11)

Lips are definitly a huge deal in today's society and finding the right shade of lipstick of gloss can definitly be a hassle. This week the Lit Monsters have decided to add a little luster to their lips and bring you five of their favourite covers.

Pretty Dead by Francesca Lia Block

Francesca Lia Block’s cover for Pretty Dead a lot like it’s main character; strangely beautiful with a hint of danger. I love how the colour of the lipstick changes from blood red around the contours of the model’s lips to a rustic orange in the center. The colour is a vibrant contrast to the pale pink colour of the model’s skin, which makes the cover pop. No vampire novel is complete without a set of fangs on the cover and the way they made the mint look like it was bleeding is a really cool effect. Lastly, I also really liked how they changed the fonts in the title to represent the meaning of the word. Making the word pretty look visually appealing, while the word dead looks stiff like a corpse.

Need by Carrie Jones

Lips, one of the most important thing on your face. Especially for us girls! Guys seem to be attracted to lips in general, which lets us experiment with some awesome lip glosses and lipsticks to find our special ' one'. Lately we've noticed these trends being on covers of books, which turn out gorgeous! My all time favorite is this one, from Carrie Jones’ novel Need. If you’re not familiar with Need’s storyline it’s about pixies, and pixies sparkle! That’s exactly what these lips are decorated with! Gold sparkles neatly portrayed on perfect lips to make this cover elegant and beautiful! A kiss with these lips could end up in a glittery situation! I give this cover a whole bunch of glitter smoocharoo's!.

Bad Taste in Boys by Carrie Harris

I can sum up my love for this cover in two words. Sugar Lips. I like how the colour of the title matches the colour of model’s lipstick. The shading under her bottom lip makes it look fuller and the lighting reflected in the sugar is rather eye catching. If you’ve never heard of this kind of art; look it up. Not only is the concept a really interesting idea but, as demonstrated on Carrie’s cover, it look freaking awesome.

Kiss by Ted Dekker & Erin Healy

Ted Dekker and Erin Healy’s cover for their novel ‘Kiss’ is simple and elegant! I like how the shadow conceals part of Shanua, the main characters lips! I also like how the light highlights the curve of her lips, chin and neck! The whole background of dark and light provides a canvas for the title of the book. I absolutely love the font of the title and how it comes out in a ‘whips’ from the ruby red lips. In a nut shell this cover is mysterious yet enticing and a good example of portraying this week’s topic ‘lips’!

Bitter Frost by Kailin Gow

I agree with Brittknee. If a story is about pixies, or fairies, glitter better be involved and to my delight Kailin’s cover for Bitter Frost is just that; a book about fairies with glitter on the cover. In Bitter Frost Breena, the main character who is half fay, is intended to marry the prince of the Winter court, Kian. The fact that the model’s lips are blue and she is so pale is a nice representation of the Winter court, not to mention what you’d probably look like if you were a snow fairy. The frosted font on the title is also a nice touch.

The lips remind me of the Dead Until Dark paperback cover!
